On April 14, 2023, the 25th“FLTRP·ETIC CUP” English Debating Competition· South Regional was held online. Gong Kuiyuan (a senior student from Finance Dept.) and Chen Zipeng (a sophomore from English Dept.) participated in the competition on behalf of Shantou University. The team was coached by Collin Tham from the English Language Center, College of Liberal Arts. They competed with 104 universities from South China, including Sun Yat-sen University, South China Normal University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) and Xiamen University.
After five rounds of fierce competition, debaters Gong Kuiyuan and Chen Zipeng ranked 3rdin team points, advanced to South Regional Final and won the 2ndRunner-up. Meanwhile, Gong Kuiyuan ranked 1stand Chen Zipeng ranked 5thamong 208 debaters in speaker points, which is the best record for Shantou University debaters in this competition since 2015. In June, Shantou University will participate in the 25th“FLTRP· ETIC” Cup National Final.
