The ELC’s biennial International Symposium and Publishers’ Exhibit is designed to enhance and promote English Language Teaching (ELT) reform in China by providing a forum for the cross-cultural exchange of ideas between leading academics, theoreticians, and professionals in the field. The symposium draws more than 150 participants each year, in addition to the Shantou University faculty and students. Formatted to accommodate this diverse group of professors, lecturers, and students, the ELC’s symposium facilitates an international and interdisciplinary fusion of ideas, helping to provide the foundation for new ways of approaching ELT in China.
Each two years, the ELC invites a number of plenary and featured speakers to address the conference on the symposium topic. The schedule is arranged so that every speech is followed by a more informal discussion session, during which conference attendees can raise questions and the topics can be further discussed in more detail. In addition to the speakers and discussion sessions, the ELC also holds a colloquium, a panel discussion on a related theme. Throughout the conference, academic publishers, both domestic and international, display their products in the Publishers’ Exhibit, where attendees have the opportunity to browse through both new teaching materials and texts on theory and practice.
The ELC’s biennial International Symposium and Publishers’ Exhibit has received praise from both its past participants and speakers, as well as from the Chinese Ministry of Education and the media. The event is endorsed by TESOL, Inc., Washington, DC, and sponsored by the Li Ka Shing Foundation, Hong Kong.
