Modern Foreign Language Education Planning in the Chinese Context: Opportunities and Challenges in Practices

Along with the deepening process of globalization, massive migration and the transnational movement of talents have become increasingly common worldwide. As China ’s “Belt and Road” initiative has been put forward and fully advanced, the country ’s demand for “multilingual” talents with multiple foreign language abilities is increasing. Modern foreign language education calls for a paradigm shift, especially with regard to the foreign language education planning of non-foreign language universities. This presentation focuses on the multilingual turn in China’s foreign language education planning and policy, and introduces the implementation of a dual foreign language model for language majors and elective LOTE programs for non-language majors. Training goals, student feedback, learners’ motivation and engagement to take part in such programs will be presented to shed light on the opportunities and challenges of implementing multilingual education in Chinese universities.
