Getting to Shantou

Shantou is located in eastern Guangdong province and is accessible by bus or air from Guangzhou (the capital city of Guangdong), Shenzhen (Guangdong), Hong Kong and Xiamen (Fujian).

 

By plane —

 

Flights arrive at the Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport (airport code: SWA). The airport is served by:

Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport (Chinese: 揭阳潮汕机场) is an airport in Jieyang, Guangdong. The airport was officially opened on 15 December 2011, replacing the old Shantou Waisha Airport. The airport codes were transferred from the old Shantou Airport. The airport serves the cities of Shantou, Chaozhou, and Jieyang. The airport became the third largest airport in Guangdong. It is about 22km, 28.5km and 24km away from the city center area of Jieyang, Shantou and Chaozhou.

 

Airport transportation:

By Airport Express Bus: There are airport express buses running from the airport to Shantou, Chaozhou and Jieyang. The buses are all luxury bus with 47 seats. At present, five routes of the airport express buses are put into operation. The airport express bus ticket office is at the left side of the Exit 4 of Arrival Hall at the first floor of the terminal. About 70 minutes’ travel time.

 

By High Speed Train (动车/高铁)—

 

Shenzhen North Railway Station (深圳北) Chaoshan Station(潮汕站)

 

You can either book your high speed train ticket online (https://kyfw.12306.cn/otn/leftTicket/init) ahead of time, or buy it at the Shenzhen North Railway Station. Everyday, there are normally 71 high speed trains that leave for or pass and stop at Chaoshan Station at different times from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.The price of the train ticket ranges from 107-171RMB.

 

From Guangzhou South Railway Station (广州南)/Guangzhou East Railway Station (广州东) Chaoshan Station(潮汕站) Shantou University

 

You can either book your high speed train ticket online (https://kyfw.12306.cn/otn/leftTicket/init) ahead of time, or buy it at the Railway Station. Everyday, there are normally 19 high speed trains that leave for or pass and stop at Chaoshan Station at different times from 7:05 a.m. to 9:21 p.m. The price of the train ticket ranges from 181.5-270.5RMB (Guangzhou South)/179.5-249.5 RMB (Guangzhou East).

★★★★From Chaoshan Station Shantou University

  • You can take Bus 181B of Shantou University direction at Chaoshan Railway Station, the last stop is Shantou University.

You can also choose to take a Gaotie Express bus (Shuttle Bus) heading to downtown Shantou. Please take the Gaotie Express Shantou West Line (高铁快线汕头西线 Pinyin: gāo tiě kuài xiàn shàn tóu xi xiàn ) and get off at Zhong Lv Bus station(中旅汽车客运站; pinyin: zhōng lǚ qì chē kè yùn zhàn). Then you can take Bus No.39 of Shantou University direction.

  • The shuttle bus ticket is 18 RMB. From Chaoshan Station to downtown Shantou, the earliest bus leaves at 8 a.m., and the latest at 9:30 p.m.

 

  • ★★★★From Chaoshan Station → Golden Gulf Hotel / Meritus Hotel / Happy Hotel

Chaoshan Station is about 30 kilometers away from Golden Gulf Hotel in downtown.

1) At Chaoshan Station, passenger can either take a taxi to Golden Gulf Hotel. The taxi drivers might not agree to go by the meter. In that case, their expected price normally is 100 RMB. If it’s late at night, it will cost you up to 150 RMB.

 

You can also choose to take a Gaotie Express bus (Shuttle Bus) heading to downtown Shantou. Please take the Gaotie Express Shantou East Line No.2 (高铁快线汕头东二线 Pinyin: gāo tiě kuài xiàn shàn tóu dōng èr xiàn ), you can stop at the last stop Golden Gulf Hotel (金海湾酒店 Pinyin: jīn hǎi wān jiǔ diàn )

     

  • ★★★★From Golden Gulf Hotel to Meritus Hotel / Happy Hotel

You can take Bus No.6 of Shantou University direction at the Golden Gulf Hotel bus stop, from which the next stop is Meritus Hotel and the following stop is Happy Hotel.

 

By bus —

 

  • From Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport –

Take the airport express bus to Guangzhou Train Station - about 30 minutes. The Guangdong Provincial Bus Station (广东省汽车站; pinyin: guǎng dōng shěng qì chē zhàn or shěng zhàn) is about 200 meters away through the west exit of the train station. Bus tickets to Shantou range from 140 to 180 RMB and the last bus leaves at 10:00 pm. The journey takes 6-7 hours.

 

  • From Shenzhen Baoan International Airport -

Take a taxi (about 50 RMB) to Baoan Long Distance Bus Station (宝安长途汽车站; pinyin: bǎo ān cháng tú qì chē zhàn) - about 20 minutes. Bus tickets to Shantou run about 150 RMB and the last bus leaves at 7:50 pm. All bus travellers should buy the ticket to Shantou Long Distance Bus Terminal (汕头汽车总站;pinyin: Shàn tǒu qìchē zōng zhàn). The journey takes 4-5 hours.

 

  • From Shenzhen Luohu Train & Bus Station -

Tickets can be purchased directly on the bus at Platform 42 for buses that leave every 20-30 minutes. Tickets run 160-170 RMB and arrive in the downtown area at Zhong Lv Bus station(中旅汽车客运站; pinyin: zhōng lǚ qì chē kè yùn zhàn)(aka the new Lotus shopping center). This will be the second stop in Shantou.

  • From Hong Kong International Airport -

From the ground transportation area, take bus 43 to Sheung Shui (上水) MTR station, then MTR one stop to the border at Lo Wu (罗湖). You will pass through both Hong Kong and mainland China passport check and customs. After crossing the border, exit the building straight ahead. The long distance bus station with buses to Shantou will be on the right hand side. Buses leave every 20-30 minutes until 9:30 pm from Platform 42. Tickets run 160-170 RMB and arrive in the downtown area at Zhong Lv bus station (中旅汽车客运站; pinyin: zhōng lǚ qì chē kè yùn zhàn) (aka the new Lotus shopping center). This will be the second stop in Shantou.

 

  • From Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport:

There is an information desk at the airport for buses to Shantou. They will transfer passengers to a downtown bus station, but buses do not run very frequently and the last one leaves at 8pm (120 RMB). Journey time is about 3-4 hours.

Route: Shantou Overseas Chinese Hotel – Chaoshan Road Nanxiang Coach Station (潮汕南翔汽车客运站) – Chaoshan International Airport
Ticket Fare: RMB 20
Operating Time at Airport: 7:00, 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00, 18:00; according to the flight schedule after 18:00
Operating Time at Shantou Overseas Chinese Hotel: 5:30, 7:30, 8:30, 9:30, 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 13:30, 14:30, 15:30, 16:30, 17:30, 18:30, 19:30

 

To Golden Gulf Hotel / Meritus Hotel / Happy Hotel: From the Jieyang Chaoshan Airport, take the express bus (Shantou West Line) to the city (20 RMB) and get off at Golden Gulf Hotel. Alternatively, a taxi directly to the school costs around 150 RMB. The taxi fare may go higher late at night. And the price may be bargainable if the taxi, either at the airport or in the city, does not use the meter.

  • From Golden Gulf Hotel to Meritus Hotel / Happy Hotel

You can take Bus No.6 of Shantou University direction at the Golden Gulf Hotel bus stop, from which the next stop is Meritus Hotel and the following stop is Happy Hotel.

 

Transportation in the city of Shantou:

Taxis are available most of the time of the day. The cost from Suning Plaza area (Meritus Hotel etc) to Shantou University is around 30-40 yuan.

 

There are five busses that come all the way to campus: 6, 17, 21, 27 and 39. They all go towards downtown Shantou and hit some of the more useful and popular destinations. All busses cost 2RMB per ride (you pay as you enter the bus, drop the money in the plastic box near the driver)
