The 2ndShantou Inter-Varsity Ends with Great Success
On October 16th, 2016, the 2ndShantou Inter-Varsity Debate Tournament (2ndSIV) ended with great success. After competing against 80 debaters from 14 universities such as Sun Yat-sen University, Xiamen University, Zhejiang University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in the three-day intense training and tournament from the 14thto 16th, Team STU was eventually awarded with 2ndrunner-up in the Grand Final and the Champion goes to Team SYSU. Liang Yongshan, from STU Business School, with the highest speaker’s score in 5 preliminary rounds, was awarded with Overall Best Speaker.
In the Grand Final of the 2ndSIV, nearly 100 students and teachers from top high schools, including Chaoyang Experimental School，Shantou Jinshan High School and Shantou No.1 High School, are invited to observe the competition. Furthermore, journalists from the Southern Daily, Shantou Television, the Shantou Daily and the Shantou Evening Post came to cover the event. A full house capacity of over 300 people attended the Grand Final.
This event was jointly host by English Language Center, STU and the English Debate Society, STU. In order to ensure the quality and transparency of the event, we invited Won Chian Lim from Singapore, the Grand-finalist of the Northeast Asia Debate Open and Deputy Chief Adjudicator of the 17th FLTRP National Finals, as our Chief Trainer and Adjudicator along with his team of trainers, all accomplished debaters from the University of Hong Kong, Peking University, Sun Yat-sen University and other top universities.
Due to its determination of providing training and evaluation of high quality, SIV has invited several world-class debaters to serve as trainers and adjudicators over the last four years. These include Loke Wing Fatt, President of the Singapore Association of Inter-Varsity Debating, Zheng Bo, the invited adjudicator of the World University Debating Championship, Chanel Chan, the invited adjudicator of the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships, and Samuel Chan, the ESL Champion of World University Debating Championship.
