Introduction to English as a World Language

 

General course description: This course presents a general introduction of the extent to which English is spread and used world-wide today, with a perspective to analyzing some language ideologies, modes, and outcomes, in relation to English learning and teaching. The focus of the course is on the introduction and debate of various language ideologies, postcolonial settings (World Englishes), as well as to explore the current status of English use in a wider scenario (English as a Lingua Franca). The current status and future development of English in the Chinese context is also discussed in this course. The core textbooks for the course are the following:
