Teaching Language Toward Intercultural Competence – April 25-27, 2014

The English Language Center at Shantou University is bringing together English language researchers and educators interested in learning and utilizing innovative and integrative frameworks, approaches, and tools in the teaching of languages, cultures, and intercultural communication at post-secondary institutions.

To help our students to develop communicative competence, we recognize that they do not need to learn the English of one specific culture, but must have the competence to interact with and negotiate meaning with interlocutors from a variety of cultures all using English as a medium of communication. Therefore, the ELC Conference 2014 at Shantou University is aimed at English language researchers and educators who wish to integrate intercultural communication and culture learning into their foreign language teaching. We welcome all those interested in joining in a dialogue on teaching language and building intercultural competence in ourselves and our students. Papers will be accepted on the role and relationship of language teaching in the following areas:

  • Intercultural communication
  • Preparing students for intercultural encounters in their home cultures
  • Culture teaching/learning
  • Teaching/learning culture through films and TV
  • Teaching/learning culture through magazines, fiction, websites and other authentic reading materials
  • Teaching/learning culture through social media
  • Teaching a culture that is not your own
