In order to improve students’ English proficiency, ELC has specially set up a reading club for students every Tuesday night at EAC. Anthony is in charge of the club and everyone is welcome. The reading club aims at promoting students’ overall handling of English language. In the reading club, students are not only practicing reading but also other learning abilities at the same time.
To have a glimpse into this club, we can start with the reading materials of the club. There is a large variety of carefully selected reading materials provided in this club, including newspapers, magazine articles, short stories, poems, and online journals. Every time, students will gather around and read the reading material out loud first. Apart from practicing pronunciation, it is also a valuable chance to broaden one’s horizon and be informed of events happening home and abroad. Admiring proper dictions as well as poetical description are also advantageous to one’s writing ability since these published articles possess a better handling of expressions. Needless to say, reading vivid sentences is an efficient way to build up one’s vocabulary. Each article has one or more themes which are related to current events or everyday life. After reading, the teacher will hold a discussion for students to exchange their ideas about what they have read and what puzzles them. Meanwhile, teachers at reading club are willing to introduce foreign customs to students based on different culture backgrounds of the articles. The Reading Club is your source of inspiration and impetus of critical thinking.
