ELC Faculty Development at Cam-TESOL
by Claudia Kunschak, ELC Director

Cam-TESOL, with 1200 participants one of the major English language teaching conferences in South East Asia, was the chosen venue for this year’s professional development initiative of ELC. The conference took place at the National Institute of Education in Phnom Penh from February 21-22, 2009 and was organized jointly by a variety of national and international institutions under the patronage of the American and Australian embassies. Pre-conference site visits to self-access learning centers, research institutions and schools as well as a Quality Assurance Forum rounded off the program. Plenary speakers Anne Burns and Jun Liu, as well as featured speakers Gwyneth Fox, Alan Maley and Om Soryong provided a framework for over 200 individual presentations during the conference. STU was represented by 11 ELC teachers (Gabriel Fang, Henry Fang, Claudia Kunschak, Ming Luo, Megan Vetter, Peter Xiao, Mingming Yuan, Emma Zhang, Lily Zhang, Haley Zheng and Rita Zheng) who gave presentations on diverse topics ranging from peer feedback to email requests, speaking assessment to learner autonomy, ICT and multiple intelligences to professional development, intercultural communication to teaching culture and student motivation. This event not only proved highly valuable for ELC faculty as a means for professional development but also served to introduce STU to a wider international audience. Follow-up workshops will be held on campus to share insights from the conference with the entire ELC faculty.
